President's Corner - November-December 2023

Happy Holidays

When Summer turns into fall and then to winter, and as we exchange our shorts and swimsuits to sweaters and coats, we look forward to staying warm and safe and we also look forward to the holidays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.  Thanksgiving is about family, friends, food, fellowship, football, and fun.  But more importantly, it is about being grateful to God for what we have and our lot in life. The tune to Hezekiah Walker’s song Grateful is playing in my head as it sums up how I feel today:

“I am grateful for the things that you have done
Yes, I'm grateful for the victories we've won
I could go on and on and on about your works
Because I'm grateful, grateful, so grateful just to praise you Lord
Flowing from my heart are the issues of my heart, it's gratefulness.

Grateful, grateful, grateful, grateful
Grateful, grateful, grateful, grateful
Grateful, grateful, grateful, gratefulness is flowing from my heart.”

Are you grateful for anything?  I am grateful for everything, but especially for Howard University and what she means to us, our people, and to the world. I am reminded of these words from our Alma Mater:

“There she stands for truth and right.

Sending forth her rays of light,

Clad in robes of majesty.

O Howard we sing of thee.”

On the heels of Thanksgiving is Christmas.  Christmas is the time for merriment, joy, happiness, love, and giving with your loved ones and friends.  It is a time when we think of peace on earth and goodwill toward men. When we think of Christmas, we think of love.  So, this Christmas, give the gift of love and make it the biggest gift you give to all you contact with.

My dear members, I am praying that you will have a safe and grateful Thanksgiving and the merriest of Christmas when you give the gift of love.

Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas!
