President’s Corner Summer 2025

Summertime

Whew!  We made it to summer, where the days are long, hot, sweaty, and carefree.  It is a time of fun, relaxation, and restoring ourselves.  After having a wonderful year of service, scholarship, and school spirit, it feels good to let our hair down, dip in the pool, walk on the beach, attend a cookout, or get our boots on the ground.

I am reminded that we come from a strong and resilient people who could laugh, rejoice, enjoy the summer even though they may have  been in bondage, they may not had a lot of money, or they were suffering under the weight of Jim crow, being killed simply because they were Black, and dealing with all sorts of injustices, indignities, and cruelties.  God is so good.  He makes the last first and the first last.  He knows how to turn the situation around so that He will get the honor.

So this summer, while you're licking an ice cream cone, or eating crabs at a crab feast, or going on a long-deserved vacation, remember that once upon a time in the not-so-distant past, our people had to find a way to relax and enjoy in spite of what they were facing. And now we can do so freely and joyfully without any regrets.

As a part of enjoying our summer, please join us at Rock Creek Park, Lot #6 on July 19, 2025, from 12 noon to 4 pm for our annual Red, White, and Bleed Blue Cookout and Freshmen Sendoff.  We are going to have great food, fun, and fellowship, along with meeting our new freshmen from the DMV area.  To raise money for our scholarship fund, we will hold a 50/50 Raffle and a silent auction.  The cost to attend is $10. You can pay online at www.dcbison.org by clicking on the donation button.  In the notes section, please write “Annual Cookout.”  I look forward to seeing you.

Our next membership meeting will be in-person on September 22, 2025, at 7 pm in Douglass Hall (tentative).  Save the Date!
