More Than 20 Years: The Eternal Impact of Mentorship and Prayer at Our HBCUs
By Alleceia M. Walker, Howard University Class of ’95
This year marks my 30th graduation anniversary from the Howard University School of Education—and I can hardly believe how fast the time has flown. In 1995, I walked across that graduation stage with honors, as the first college graduate in my family. That moment didn’t just make me a graduate—it made me a pioneer.
But I didn't get there by talent or tenacity alone. I got over by faith.
When tuition bills outpaced my financial aid, and the numbers simply didn’t add up, I leaned on the only formula that never failed: prayer, fasting, and unwavering belief. Time and again, God provided a ram in the bush. It was in those late-night prayer calls and tearful petitions that I found strength—not only to stay enrolled, but to stay rooted.
That testimony birthed a calling to give back—not just to Howard, but to the generations coming behind me. In 2004, that calling became a movement: The IMPACT Difference.
What began with a simple mantra—“Howard can’t get a dime, but our Baby Bison can have my time”—evolved into a powerful legacy of mentorship, discipleship, and life coaching for students who needed more than classroom instruction. Over the past 20 years, I’ve walked beside hundreds of young scholars—not just to graduation, but into adulthood, careers, marriages, ministry, and purpose.
Because mentoring isn’t a four-year commitment. It’s a life-long investment.
And yet, in all the ways we equip our students for success, we must never forget the spiritual foundation that sustained so many of us through our own collegiate journeys. HBCUs were not just birthed in resistance—they were birthed in revival. Many of our campuses were built on the prayers of our ancestors, and we must return to those roots if we want to see lasting transformation in our communities and on our campuses.
That’s why, in Spring 2023, during a mentoring meet-up at Sankofa, I asked a group of students to join me in a simple act with profound meaning: a campus prayer walk. That moment sparked what has now become the HBCU Prayer Walk Challenge, a twice-a-year invitation for students, alumni, faculty, and staff to reclaim their spiritual ground—literally and figuratively.
The challenge has grown rapidly. After our launch at Howard, we passed the torch to Florida A&M University in Fall 2024, and they accepted. From there, Tennessee State University, Norfolk State University, and Hampton University have all stepped up with boldness to declare:
“I Pray for My HBCU—How About You?”
In these times of cultural uncertainty, racial unrest, and spiritual fatigue, our students need more than scholarships and syllabi. They need community, accountability, and the covering of prayer. And those of us who’ve walked these halls before them must remind them: you are never alone, and you are never without power.
So to my fellow alumni, mentors, and faith leaders—let's not let our students walk their journeys unaccompanied. Let’s walk with them. Let’s pray with them. Let’s cover our HBCUs with the same faith that carried us through.
Because what started as mentorship has become ministry.
And what begins with one walk of faith can change the future of a generation.
